Every year, over 50 million tonnes of e-waste are produced worldwide. This corresponds to about 6,849 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower. Small electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets or laptops make up the majority of e-waste. Only 20% of discarded electronic devices are recycled, the rest end up in landfills or in nature. If the current trend continues, we will produce 120 million tonnes of e-waste by 2050 (Baldé et al., 2017).
Sustainability at refurbed
Reducing e-waste and using raw materials longer
Reducing CO2 through refurbishment
Whether coltan, gold or tin: electronic devices contain a multitude of valuable, natural materials. The extraction of these raw materials from our planet is usually accompanied by environmental pollution, dangerous working conditions or even child labour (Centre for European Policy Studies, 2019). However, the raw materials often only have a short useful life. For example: only 8% of Germans use their mobile phones for longer than 24 months (Bitkom Research, 2021). If devices end up in illegal landfills or in nature after being replaced, this has a terrible impact on the environment and the human population. This is because e-waste contains toxic substances such as lead, mercury or cadmium. Refurbishment and the circular economy extend the product life cycle, minimise the waste of resources and prevent both people and nature from suffering from unnecessary toxic e-waste. With our refurbed™ products, we have already reduced more than 422,000 kg of e-waste.
1 tree is planted per device sold
We also work with our partners, Reforest Nation and Eden Reforestation Projects, to plant a tree in your name for every product you buy. You can choose whether the tree is planted in Ireland, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique or Nepal. By doing so, you can choose to help reforest Ireland, and/or support various countries that are particularly affected by climate change.
By planting a tree for every sold product, we further reduce the burden on the environment. Moreover, our tree planting partners ensure to plant native trees to each locality, furthering developing biodiversity and creating habitats for local wildlife. In total, we have already planted over 3 million trees.

The production of electronic devices is also associated with high CO2 emissions. For an iPhone X, the amount of CO2 produced is roughly equivalent to the amount of CO2 emitted when driving a 2017 Prius for around 745 kilometres. About 78% of the phone's emissions are emitted solely during the production of the mobile phone. The remaining 22% are caused by the transport, use and recycling of the device (Apple, 2017). Refurbishing reduces around 70% of CO2 emissions compared to new production. For a mobile phone this is around 43 kg of CO2, for a laptop around 210 kg (Quantis, 2018). The reason for this is that only individual components are usually replaced in the refurbishing process; if any replacement is needed at all. In total, we at refurbed have already saved over 58 million kg of CO2 since launching.

Reforestation plays a significant role in strengthening and ensuring the long-term resilience of fragile ecosystems. Our partners, Reforest Nation and Eden Reforestation Projects, plants only different native tree species in the respective countries. This biodiversity increases species diversity and promotes natural regeneration. When you buy a refurbed™ device, you can plant your tree in one of the following countries:
Only 2% of Haiti's original rainforest remains today. Disasters such as flooding hit the island particularly hard as a result. It is therefore all the more important to strengthen Haiti's nature through reforestation.
Indonesia's forests are shrinking by 6.2 million hectares a year. In total, over 80% of the rainforest has already been cleared. With your tree you help to give something back to the country's nature.
42% of the people in Kenya live below the poverty line. Reforestation creates important jobs for the population and gives something back to nature. Currently, only 7% of the country is covered with forests.
75% of the animal species in Madagascar are found nowhere else in the world. It is all the worse that 90% of the forest area has already been cleared. With your tree, you help to preserve Madagascar's biodiversity.
Mozambique is home to over 5,700 plant species, 685 bird species, 195 mammal species, 228 reptiles and 59 amphibians. Reforestation preserves this country's incredible biodiversity.
Nepal is home to 27 endangered mammal species, including Asian elephants, clouded leopards and armoured rhinos. Your tree will give these animals back a piece of their habitat.

How refurbed supports the circular economy
Our goal at refurbed is to stop the development of unnecessary e-waste, and to make better use of our earth's resources! How do we want to achieve this? At refurbed, we focus on the circular economy: when you buy a refurbed™ device, you reduce harmful e-waste by using existing resources longer, lessening the need for new resources to be used, and also saving CO2 emissions.
